Especialmente peligrosas son las sustancias cuya toxicidad persiste por largo tiempo en el ambiente y\/o en los seres vivos. Por ejemplo, el mercurio se volatiliza f\u00e1cilmente en climas tropicales, convirti\u00e9ndose en metil mercurio. Este compuesto se acumula en el agua y suelos, pasando luego a acumularse en los tejidos grasos de peces y humanos respectivamente.
